Hygge in the early years

Dear Parents and Carers,

We’re so excited to tell you that over the next year  we will begin a brand new journey as we study for the Hygge in Early Years Accreditation.

Hygge is the Danish approach to life that focuses on having a happier and more simple life. Using elements of warmth, cosiness and nature to make the most of every day of the year. As we move through the training we will learn about changes we can make to our learning environments, outdoor provision and daily rhythm to bring in more calmness.

A big part of our training will also look at supporting our wellbeing and the children. We will gain an understanding of how we can promote more self care and some activities we can try to connect with nature.

As we progress with this journey we will keep you informed of the changes we’re making. You’ll be invited in for our family hygge workshop and we shall share other updates on our facebook page. We will share some hygge tips to help you too!

Environmental awareness

The aim is to encourage children and parents to appreciate and value our living environment; to develop their understanding of the living world and the impact they have on it. I will be encouraging children to learn new skills, have fun and develop self-confidence by spending time in a garden – tending plants and growing their own food. Most children enjoy being outdoors and love digging in the soil, getting dirty, creating things and watching plants grow.

Research has shown that gardening helps children develop many skills such as:

  • Responsibility – caring for plants.

  • Understanding – learning about cause-and-effect i.e.. Plants die without water.

  • Self-confidence – achieving goals and enjoying food they have grown.

  • Love of nature – a chance to learn about the outdoor environment in a safe and pleasant place.

  • Reasoning and discovery – learning about plants, animals, weather, the environment etc.

  • Nutrition – learning to enjoy and appreciate where fresh food comes from.

I’m fortunate enough to have a garden, I see this as an asset to my setting and aim to have the children participate in many of the activities required to produce fruit, flowers and vegetables.

Homemade Food

Should your child have an allergy, please let me know.

  • I believe it is essential to provide children with positive healthy eating experiences to promote their wellbeing. I also encourage children to look at the long-term effects of a healthy and balanced diet. I respect the different dietary, cultural and health needs of all the children.

  • A good balanced diet is vital for children to develop healthily along with fresh air and regular exercise.

  • I have good knowledge of nutrition, I am happy to provide all children in my care with healthy snacks, drinks and meals.

  • I encourage children to choose healthy options and to experiment by trying new foods from other cultures.

  • We will sit at the table to have meals or enjoy the good weather by going to the park for a picknick. Children will have a meal provided to them if they are there at the relevant time.

  • If you would like to send your child with their own food, please keep in mind that I encourage you to pack healthy food because the other children could become upset.

  • I do not permit children to have fizzy drinks, unless it is a special occasion. Children are offered water or milk.

  • The children will get to enjoy all types of food including what we bake together my aim is a balanced diet. Of cause they will have birthday cake, Welsh cakes to celebrate st Davids day etc

Freedom to explore outside parks, nature walks, messy play

Jade's baby owl’s child minding is situated in Pembroke dock and opened in 2024. I have an open plan dining/living room with a cosy play area with a variety of stimulating toys to spark and engage interest. Whether your little one enjoys getting lost in stories, dressing up, building dens, painting, driving cars around or discovering dinosaurs there is something for everyone. When enjoying our home cooked meals we'll be sitting around the dining table. the children will be able to play in an area of the garden that is geared towards them where I will encourage the children to learn about how to support the natural environment, grow their own veg, enjoy the flowers that we will grow for the bees and learn about the frogs in the pond. My bathroom is upstairs so when the children need to use the facilities, I will escort them. In quiet time there are sleep mats/soft area with bean bags and a travel cot for the children to use. When you come to drop off your child there is on road parking.

    Pets

Companionship and Unconditional Love One of the most obvious benefits of having a pet. I believe that children can learn a lot from having contact with animals, however certain procedures will be followed to ensure the safety of the children:

    • Children must be encouraged to treat all animals with respect, learning how to handle them correctly.

    • Children must wash their hands after any contact with animals and understand the reasoning behind this.

    • Children must be taught that not all animals are child friendly and that they should always check with the animal’s owner before attempting to stroke or handle them.

    • Food for our pets will be stored safely away from the children’s reach.

    • A high standard of hygiene will be followed, with careful thought given to the placing of the feeding and drink bowls.

    • Our cat is up to date with vaccinations and fully wormed.

    • Litter tray is in the locked cupboard under the stairs and cleaned regularly. Children will not be permitted into the cupboard.

    Get to Know Us

I understand how difficult it is for parents to leave their child with a childminder and return to work. I will therefore work with you to ensure your child is settled and that you are happy with the care that I provide.

Prior to children joining my setting I like to organise settling in sessions for the parents and child. This gives you the opportunity to provide me with lots of information about your child, their likes and dislikes, routines, favourite activities, how to comfort them if they become upset and how they have reacted when left before. It gives me the opportunity to start to build a relationship with you and your child and to understand both your needs and wishes.

After this visit I would normally encourage a short visit where your child comes alone. I am happy for you to stay until you feel your child is settled. Some children do take longer than others to settle and some settle quickly and then become distressed a few weeks into the placement. I will work with you to support your child through this transitional period and make it as easy as possible. It is important that you and your child are relaxed and happy in my home and with the care I provide.

    Settling in sessions

settling in sessions are an important part of your child’s transition into my care. I offer.

    1 x 1 hour with you.

free of charge. If you would like to book further short settling in sessions, please let me know. They will be charged at the normal hourly rate, billed in advance.

during which time the notice period will not be required if either party wishes to end the arrangement.
